What I want to write about for my last blog of the semester is not about a particular story. Neither is it about a particular person. I want to write about America’s obsession with celebrities. I only had two bogs that were devoted to celebrities, but I could’ve had a lot more believe me. We have blogs, websites, and television shows that are dedicated to telling us the news about their lives. What is the fascination with these people? I will be the first to admit that I too can sit down and watch an hour of E news, but why? These people are constantly putting themselves in the public eye so they can withstand their public image. In my last post, I talk about any publicity is good publicity. This is a common quote that many celebs say, but is this the case? Sure Tiger Woods was in the magazines for being an adulterer, but was the public scrutiny worth it. I would have to agree to only a certain extent. Yes your name was in the public and everyone is talking about you. But in Wood’s case, people started talking about how this could affect his golfing and talking about how he was not this family man that everyone thought he was. To me this is when bad publicity continues to be bad publicity, but what do I know. I’m not a celebrity.

PR Squared- Surprise and DelightOver the weekend Dave Fleet posted up a graphic on Facebook that wowed me. But some wiseguy at Google gave no mind [...]

- What Do You Mean, Exactly, by Social Media?A colleague cornered me the other day to declaim, “My team needs to do more Social Media.” This puzzled me as we’re pretty well known for being good at this stuff. “Define exactly what you mean by ‘doing Social Media,’” I replied. “Define Social Media?” they asked incredulously. “Yes,” I said. “When you say we need [...] […]
- Seven Principles of Content MarketingNow that we’ve all agreed that “Content is King (Again),” and Content Marketing is all the rage, maybe it is time to think about some easy-to-follow tenets. Let’s keep this simple. Follow a 70/30 Rule – 70% of content curated, 30% branded. Why? Because the rest-of-the-world is at least 70% more interesting than your brand; and, promoting extern […]

- Not Everything Will Be Awesome – The Ping Is Half The BattleLast week the inimitable Oatmeal published a kick-ass screed on the douchebaggery of most “Social Media Marketers.” (Seriously, click the link, it’s great.) The essential message was to “do awesome stuff and people will ‘like’ you online.” And that’s true, as far as it goes. But there’s another message that marketers need to he […]
- Surprise and Delight

I’m the same way. I watch (and read) about the celebrities in the news, and sometimes I find myself too fascinated by their lives. Other times, I’m disgusted at myself for caring. They are normal people, why does it matter what they do? There is an All Time Low song called “Sick Little Games” that I often relate to in cases like these. The song says, “Oh my God, I’m such a terrible mess.I’m turned on by the tabloids, you would never have guessed, that I’m a sucker for their gossip, man I take it too far. I bottle up my Hollywood, and watch them name their kids after cars.” The song is basically about how we give celebrities so much hype. They are artists, yes, but do we need to treat them like gods? As if they are supposed to do no wrong? By being caught up in their lives, we are forgetting to live ours.
I think the whole “there is no such thing as bad publicity” only makes sense in the eyes of being known and not necessarily famous. Meaning if the objective is not to like or disliked but simply for people to know who you are than yes I agree that your name in the paper, for whatever reason, is still your name in the paper. However I also think that it is safe to say that it is not likely too many celebrities out there have this goal. So when you get down to it, the saying does not really ring true to some classic examples like Kanye West or Tiger Woods. Like you said if all your publicity is doing is ruining your reputation that it is not a good thing.
